The fifth annual Clinic on the Meaningful Modelling of Epidemiological Data was held 2-14 June 2014. This annual two-week modelling clinic, mounted by SACEMA in collaboration with the International Clinics on Infectious Disease Dynamics and Data (ICI3D) Program, and the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), emphasizes the use of data in understanding infectious disease dynamics. The Clinic brings together graduate students, post-doctoral students and researchers from Africa and North America, with the goal of engaging the participants in epidemiological modelling projects that use real data to grapple with practical questions in a meaningful way.

The Clinic consists of a series of discussions and tutorials that guide participants through the process of data‐based dynamical modelling of disease spread. Participants are encouraged to bring data sets and questions to the Clinic, and to start collaborative projects with each other or the organizers. All participants are required to present on previous or ongoing research that is related to the Clinic's themes. Various statistical and modelling paradigms are discussed. Computer exercises and group projects reinforce and extend the various concepts covered. Participants are encouraged to continue research projects begun during the Clinic when they return to their home institutions and will be required to complete a written report on group projects.

Students and researchers with a demonstrated interest in infectious disease research are encouraged to apply. The Clinic is targeted towards those that have prior knowledge of mathematical epidemiology, but have not yet established themselves in the field. Preference will be given to applicants that have the most to gain from Clinic participation.

Funding is available to cover food, lodging and travel costs for a limited number of Clinic participants from Africa. The application process for the Clinic is highly competitive.

Applications for MMED 2015 will be invited in January 2014
